Can the reinforcing steel in concrete be hot-dip galvanized?
Concrete neutralization—also known as carbonation—and salt exposure can readily cause reinforcing steel to corrode. The resulting rust expands in volume, leading to concrete spalling and posing a significant safety concern for structures. Galvanized reinforcing steel is gaining attention as a viable solution. Tests have demonstrated that the bond between galvanized steel and concrete is comparable to that of black‑coated steel, and over long-term service, it may even outperform the latter.
